As the title already suggests, it is a deliberately wild and energetic work, a kind of musical reflection of our times, full of contradictions, tension, and restless pulse. The Spanish title hints at the Latin American rhythmic influences that shape the second movement in particular. The piece is written in three movements – Ruby, Blue Sapphire, and Black Tourmaline – each named after a precious healing stone whose color and energy serve as symbols for the emotional world of the music. The first movement, Ruby, begins like an old steam train slowly gathering speed, until it bursts into the main, rather cynical theme. A choral middle section offers a deceptive calm before the theme returns, and soon after the train begins to slow - heavy, uneven, and almost ungraceful - before giving way directly to Blue Sapphire. This second movement pulses with the heartbeat of Latin grooves and rhythms, radiating warmth, sensuality, and a touch of longing. Finally, Black Tourmaline dives deep into the sound world of electronic music, strongly influenced by the hypnotic energy and relentless drive of the legendary techno pioneer Jeff Mills, a hypnotic finale where acoustic strings collide with electronic intensity. Locos Cellos is, in many ways, a portrait of our era - crazy, vibrant, and full of contrasts - but also a celebration of the cello’s immense expressive power and the unity that emerges when eight voices breathe and move as one. — Christoph Croisé
