Das Entscheidende geschah im Adagio: Welche Intensität entwickelten die beiden jungen Interpreten hier! Franz Schubert hat es ihnen im schlank gesetzten langsamen Satz seiner Arpeggione-Sonate (D 821) nicht leicht gemacht. Über klassisch-schlichter Klavierbegleitung verweilt die Melodie des Cellos immer wieder auf langen Tönen, die – wenn die Musiker nicht ganz bei der Sache sind – unversehens an Spannung verlieren. Das Gegenteil geschah im Spiel von Christoph Croisé und Oxana Shevchenko: Während Shevchenko die Akkorde im Klavier meist bewusst in den Hintergrund stellte, um nur an bestimmten Punkten Akzente zu setzen, widmete sich Croisé jedem Ton mit höchster Konzentration.

Next we heard Swiss-based cellist, Christoph Croisé, playing a modern 2009 instrument by Gunther Lobe, in Saint-Saëns’ lovely A minor concerto. The quality of this instrument was immediately apparent in the opening fantasia – a series of downward flourishes for the cellist, over punctuating orchestral acclamations.

Beim Schweizer Cellisten Christoph Croisé am Donnerstag in der Lukaskirche war das Zusammenspiel mit der Pianistin Oxana Shevchenko durchgehend phänomenal. Prokofjews Cellosonate führte Croisé von der satt-süffigen Einleitung über vollklingendes Pizziccato-Spiel zu gesanglichen Aufschwüngen in helle Höhen. Die Feinheiten im Zusammenspiel mit der Pianistin rissen das Publikum zu Zwischenapplaus hin.

He (Croisé) was able to capture the audience with his emotions from the very beginning. In the solo parts, we could clearly hear his breaths, perfectly corresponding to the expression of the composition. To this we can add the highest level of technical skill and the humility with which he presented the work and, in a way, himself—waving to the audience with a smile as he left the stage. He divided the phrases completely systematically and, despite the melody spreading across different octaves, he used his instrument to sing Hebrew melodic lines while precisely following the swinging rhythm. At times, it seemed as if he was experiencing a kind of ecstasy.
